Only training and martial arts ability can do that, assets the Praetorian Guard clearly had in abundance. One scene features Captain Phasma shrugging off a blaster bolt to the chest, so it's obvious that the First Order has the means to create armor much more durable than the almost pointlessly fragile brand worn by average Stormtroopers.Īll this being said, no amount of fancy weaponry can help a person survive long in a fight against an angry Force user. Because it was extremely difficult and expensive to mine, cortosis was only used by powerful Sith Lords and other people with very deep pockets.Ĭortosis has yet to come into play much in the new Disney-approved Star Wars universe, but it's possible that it or a similar substance was used to construct the Praetorian Guard's weapons. That's thanks to a mineral known as cortosis, a super-dense substance that can short out lightsaber blades and even withstand direct blaster fire.

In the old Expanded Universe stories, there's even a precedent for armor so tough it can withstand lightsaber strikes. And though each member of Snoke's Praetorian Guard appeared to have their own weapon and fighting style, each of those weapons was augmented by a similar, lightsaber-repelling plasma technology. We also saw it with the deadly plasma axes wielded by the Stormtrooper Executioners in The Last Jedi. We saw it in The Force Awakens, where the militant Stormtrooper FN-2199 dueled Finn with an electrified riot control baton. That technology appears to have survived and been harnessed by the First Order. Those tips may not have been capable of slicing through anything like a lightsaber can, but they at least proved enough to block lightsaber blades and makes these droids far more difficult opponents than the average Separatist droid. As seen in Revenge of the Sith, each of these droids wielded a staff with electrified tips. That technology dates back at least to the days of General Grievous and his MagnaGuard droids.

It helps that the Praetorian Guard wield weapons that can withstand a lightsaber strike. But in truth, the Praetorian Guards are just the latest example of ordinary warriors doing battle with Force users. Once Ren claims the mantle of Supreme Leader of the First Order for himself, he decides to surround himself with former collaborators, the Knights of Ren, instead of following in the footsteps of both Snoke and Palpatine with their guards. It might seem crazy that ordinary soldiers (no matter how well trained) could go toe-to-toe with powerful Force users wielding indestructible lightsabers.

They were well trained in several forms of martial arts and were also armed with various high-tech melee weapons that were powerful enough to go into combat against lightsabers, as seen when they duel both Kylo Ren and Rey during Star Wars: The Last Jedi.Īfter witnessing the murder of their master Supreme Leader Snoke at the hands of Kylo Ren, the Elite Praetorian Guards battle Kylo and Rey but are all slain in the duel. The Elite Praetorian Guard consisted of eight highly trained human warriors that served Snoke, much like the Imperial Royal Guards who protected Emperor Palpatine during the reign of the Galactic Empire.Ĭlad in bold red armour and robes, the Elite Praetorian Guards intentionally struck a visual resemblance to their predecessors, but otherwise seemed to be even more skilled in defensive skill.
